Estructure provided structural engineering services for the AHU and Chiller Equipment Upgrade at 900 Blake Wilbur, Stanford, CA. Two existing rooftop AHUs were replaced with one larger AHU sized to serve the entire building. An existing chiller was also replaced. Estructure identified early in the design that the lightweight roof framing would not be able to directly support the heavy AHU. To bypass the existing roof framing, Estructure designed an elevated steel platform. This platform spans to the existing building columns and allowed the design to proceed without triggering strengthening of the existing roof framing. Construction occurred while the building remained occupied. To minimize system downtime, the platform was designed for phased construction, allowing for immediate installation of the new AHU upon removal of the existing unit.
