A former grocery store was seismically upgraded upon conversion to a fitness center. The building consists of a one-story building with a flexible wood roof diaphragm and reinforced masonry perimeter walls. The building owner engaged Estructure to design a voluntary seismic retrofit of the building to improve its seismic performance. A detailed site visit was conducted to survey the existing structure and identify building elements where strengthening would be most effective. The seismic retrofit guided by the methodology of ASCE 41 Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings, focused on strengthening the roof-to-wall connections. Retrofitting was implemented cost-effectively when the building was unoccupied.
